New service introduced for expat driving test

29 June 2016

The Dubai Road and Transport Authority (RTA) has recently made some amendments to Dubai driving theory test. Accordingly, expert translators would be used during the examination for those who do not know the 10 languages that the tests come in.

This has been planned for September 2016, an official at the RTA said.

The Director of Drivers Training and Qualification Department, Arif Al Malik, said that the remote interpretation service for any other languages which is not included in the 10 languages will use expert translators during the exam.

The theory test is now introduced in seven new languages, making the total number of languages to ten. This will help many nationalities to take tests, he said.

A new hazard perception test was introduced in July 2015 to improve skill and knowledge of new drivers, which helps to identify hazardous driving situations, he said.

The 'yard test' will be done without having an examiner sit in the test vehicle. This step, the RTA feels will help boost driver confidence, and hence, reduces accidents.

Arif Al Malik also said that the yard test would be fully automated test, without having an examiner sit in the vehicle, in the near future, as this will ensure fair and accurate testing. Moreover, it will prepare student for ‘solo’ driving, which in-turn boosts their confidence during driving license test, resulting in lesser traffic accidents.

The system will be the first in the world to use state-of-the-art-technology which is not used elsewhere, and would be vigorously tested to meet high safety standards.
