UAE Discovers World's Fourth Largest Natural Gas Reserve

21 February 2020

There are some reasons for the UAE government to celebrate as they discovered the Jebel Ali gas field. The discovery of this new natural gas field will take the UAE one step further towards its mission of becoming an energy-independent nation.

This gas field contains over eighty trillion cubic feet of gas, which is a massive quantity, as the authorities reported on Monday. Currently, the UAE is dependent on its neighboring LNG-rich nation Qatar to fulfill its electricity and energy requirement. Thus, this new natural gas field is an important discovery as it’ll make the UAE an energy-independent country.

Senior government officials of the two emirates, Abu Dhabi and Dubai, signed an agreement for developing and exploring this natural gas resource. They appointed ADNOC for Abu Dhabi and Dubai Supply Authority for Dubai to work on this project.

ADNOC said to media, “This discovery reinforces the nation’s goal of achieving gas self-sufficiency, enabling major development projects.”

Currently, all the gulf nations, including the UAE, are getting the LNG gas supply from Qatar via the Dolphin pipeline project. Although the UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt accused Qatar of supporting terrorism and launched a blockage, Qatar didn't stop its LNG supply. However, Qatar strongly opposed and denied this allegation and confronted for open discussion multiple times. This year-long diplomatic crisis started in 2017 is still in place.

Sultan al-Jaber, ADNOC’s CEO, said, “reinforces ADNOC’s commitment to ensuring a sustainable and economic gas supply and achieving gas self-sufficiency.”

He further said that both the official bodies are working together to develop a 1,930 square miles shallow gas field. However, the time required to complete this project or its estimated cost is unknown.

It is essential to know what the UAE discovered are shallow gas resources. Producing the required energy from these gas resources requires advanced technology. But, with a massive of 42 million metric tonnes annual LNG production, Qatar is the largest liquefied natural gas producer in the world. This tiny nation also produces this fuel from the largest gas field in the world, the North Field.

Here is the list of oil and gas companies in UAE.
