Residential areas to get new cycling and running tracks

The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded a contract for construction of cycling and running tracks across five residential areas in the UAE.

The tracks are located at Khawaneej, Mizhar, Mirdif, Mushrif and Warqaa, stretching 57kms, and will be built over a 12 month period at an estimated cost of about Dh.79mn.

The first project involves construction of a cycling and running route stretching 32kms at Mushrif, Mirdif, Mizhar, Khawaneej and three other bridges for use of cyclists and pedestrians at Al Khawaneej worth Dh.52mn, revealed Mattar Al Tayer, the Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA.

The other projects include construction of cycling and running tracks stretching 25kms at Warqaa, a bridge for cyclists and pedestrians at Tripoli Road, costing Dh.27mn, he pointed out.

He further said that these districts have been chosen based on various parameters highlighted by locations and existing obstacles, and traffic safety. Moreover, the lanes have been designed in a manner so as to offer safety and security for cyclists.

Meanwhile, the RTA has lately opened the Dubai Cycling Track stretching 23kms, the project links with existing cycling lane of Seih Assalam at Al Qudra Road, extending further in the direction of Emirates Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Latifa bint Hamdan Road, Al Barrari and up to Nad Al Sheba.

The 115km long cycling tracks at Seih Assalam includes various public utilities, a fully equipped medical clinic, outlets for renting bikes, and 10 rest points along the biking lane fitted with bike racks and seats.
