This is Stanley Kubrick's Oscar-winning adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke's short story 'The Sentinel', which tracks a tumultuous mission to space. When the ship's computer system begins to behave erratically, the astronauts on board must battle the machine during a mind-bending adventure.
John Lennon said he went to see it every week when it was released in April, 1968. It was the top-grossing movie of the year and is now a perennial on critics’ lists of the most important movies of all time, often the first movie scientists mention if you ask them about sci-fi they have enjoyed.
Well ahead of its time, the film was noted for its accurate depiction of space flight and pioneering standout special effects. It went on to win Best Special Visual Effects at the Academy Awards and multiple accolades at the British Academy Film Awards.
