| The Careers Fair 2009 organized in Dubai, which ended today, indicates that there is an uncertainty over the employment situation. It has been noticed that a majority of Emiratis still prefer being employed in the public sector. The visitor inflow was comparatively slower than last year. A national, employed in the private sector, who spoke to the Gulf News, said As an Emirati, I would prefer to work for the government sector to secure my future. The government sector does not get rid of Emiratis under any circumstances, apart from the advantages of winning the appreciation that the government provides its employees with, unlike in the private sector. However, there is a lack of security felt in the private sector. In majority of cases, they keep rotating them between the sections, and the employees feel hatred about the job and therefore resign willingly. Another Emirati employee working in the semi-government sector said “After working in a government sector for nearly seven years, I am interested to apply for another position within the government sector to improve my skills. I would like to remain with the government sector as it is a source of security, not only to me, but to all Emiratis.” Another executive at a private company agreed that the number of visitors and the number of exhibitors have been comparatively less this year, owing to the market situation. Several major companies are participating for mere public relations. When contacted, the companies say they have temporarily stopped hiring people. The Customer Relationship Officer at the National Bank of Abu Dhabi, Ahmad Al Mutawa, however, said that although the demand was much higher last year, the company has received several applications. The Bank has few vacancies for Emiratis, and plans to hire more than 200 Emiratis at present. The Careers Fair 2009 is the largest training, education and recruitment event organized for nationals by the Dubai World Trade Center (DWTC). The 3-day Fair which began on 29th March, ended on 31st March at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Center.
