Dubai ranked as most expensive city for expats in Gulf
Dubai is one of the most expensive cities in the Gulf for expatriates. The cost of living for expatriates has also gone up at other places in the region, mainly due to currency fluctuations, reveals a survey report.
While Dubai stood at 20th place (compared to 52nd place last year), Abu Dhabi jumped to 26th position from the 65th position in global ranking, the Dubai-headquartered consulting firm, Mercer said. The Survey Head for consultancy firm Mercer, Bassam Gazal pointed out that due to the direct impact of global economic turmoil last year there has been considerable fluctuations in majority of world’s currencies.
As for Dubai and Abu Dhabi, strong US dollar indicates increase in rankings.
Tokyo and Osaka were recorded as the world’s most expensive cities for expatriates, as per the 2009 Cost of Living Survey by Mercer.
The survey included 143 cities from across the world, measuring comparative cost of 200 items, including food, clothing, transport, housing, entertainment and household items.
Kuwait City was ranked 77th position from 94th and Manama reached 82nd position from 112th, the survey results showed. Other cities in the region did not fall in the 143 rankings of the study, Mercer said.
