UAE hotline for consumer protectionThe UAE has devised a new method to fight inflation. The consumers have been requested to report any untoward hike in prices by registering a complaint on the toll-free number, which would help authorities to crack down on the errant retail outlet.
The Consumer Law, effective since 2006, made way for creation of the Consumer Protection Department, which imposes obligations on suppliers of goods or services that gives the aggrieved consumers their necessary rights and remedies.
“We need time to implement the law. We also need to educate the consumers and businessmen. We are keen that all sectors will adhere to the rules in the next few years,” said Abdullah Mohammed Al Shehi, Department of Economic Development.
The initiative follows the deal signed between Ministry of Economy and the Union Co-operative Society setting prices of 16 essential food items at last year’s levels.
The Consumer Protection Department has the right to investigate consumer complaints and represent consumers in the courts or other agencies.
As per law, a minimum of Dh.1000 will be for any violation, and a minimum of Dh.10,000 will be fined in case the supplier does not alert consumers regarding the risk involved in using harmful products. The court has the right to order the confiscation or destruction of certain products that are considered unsafe and seriously defective. The awareness campaign is a move to control prices, and we hope this will prompt one and all in the supply chain to keep prices from rising, said Ashraf Ali, Executive Director, LuLu Group of Companies.
As per the law, the consumer has the right to be protected against unsafe products, and has the right to request replacement, repair or refund defective products, among other. The consumers can call the Ministry’s toll free number 600522225.
