Global Village meets a tragic end this year

Global Village was closed on Sunday, after an Indian Pavilion collapsed killing one person and injuring 13 others.

An Arab woman was killed due to partial collapse of an Indian Pavilion when a wooden piece from the gates fell on the victim, while several other injured victims who sustained light to moderate injuries were admitted to the hospital.

According to a statement from the CEO of Global Village, Saeed Ali Bin Redha, Global Village remained closed on Sunday, the 28th February 2010, due to the expected bad weather.

In a note, Ali Bin Redha said that the incident which occurred on 27th February 2010 was due to bad and unexpected weather conditions, when an element of the Indian pavilion entrance fell.

"The Global Village management extends its condolences to the family of the deceased and its sympathy to the injured and their families, and will remain available to assist them. Global Village management is working closely with Dubai Police and other concerned authorities to assist them with their investigations," Redha said.

The visitor numbers to Global Village this year is better than last year, according to organizers, but according to retailers spending is yet to catch-up.

The retail spending at the country-themed pavilions have fallen by 50 percent. This coupled with increase in rents, it has been a constant struggle to break-even, they said.

Even on one day ahead of closing date, the visitor numbers recorded were ahead of last year at 4.4million. The 28th February, being the last day of Global Village this year, visitor numbers were expected to surge, but the entertainment had to meet with an unplanned closure one day ahead of scheduled closure.

Launched by Tatweer in 1996, the annual Global Village Festival features carnival rides, entertainment, food and shopping in more than 30 pavilions.
