The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will open a new bridge on Friday, as part of plans to give better access to Dubai’s fast-growing international airport.
The bridge is located at the intersection of Airport-Casablanca Streets, in proximity to the Cargo Village building. The bridge forms part of Airport Street Project, aimed at accommodating the projected growth in passenger numbers using Dubai International Airport, which is likely to hit 92 million by 2020.
According to the Director General and Chairman of RTA, Mattar Al Tayer, upgrading the intersection of the Airport-Casablanca Street includes construction of an additional single-lane bridge that will help serve the traffic from the Airport Street, moving towards Casablanca Street.
The project includes construction an alternative route for motorists coming in from Al Garhoud, enabling direct access to Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 of the Dubai International Airport. It is also involved in increasing the number of lanes of Casablanca Street in the direction of Al Garhoud from three to four lanes.
The improvements are hoped to considerably reduce the total waiting time at the intersection of Casablanca Street and ease congestion in the area, he pointed out.
On completion of the Airport Street Project, the capacity of Airport Street will increase by an additional 5000 vehicles per hour.
