With the new service from RTA, the bike enthusiasts can now consider hiring a bicycle from tram stations when they are on the go.
The rental service will be initially made available at Dubai Media City, Knowledge Village, The Palm Jumeirah and Al Sufouh Stations of Dubai Tram. In the following phase, bicycles will also be available from Dubai Marina Stations and Jumeirah Lake Tower and extension of Al Sufouh Street separating Marina and JBR.
According to RTA, the initiative is meant to encourage people to add bicycles as part of their mobility options within the dedicated cycling tracks. Last year, the RTA opened a nine-kilometre long cycling track along the tramway on Al Sufouh Road, half of which is aligned with pedestrian walkway. The track runs all the way to Jumeirah Beach Residence.
The Director of Traffic at RTA’s TRAffic and Road Agency, Hussain Al Banna said that the service complements the effort by the department in linking existing cycling lanes along Jumeirah Street with the Marina, and an extension of the JBR Walk.
The dedicated bikeway is located amidst Al Sufouh Station and Dubai Media City Station, while a mixed-use track is built from Jumeirah Beach Residence Station 1 all along the loop which circles around Dubai Marina up to Dubai Marina Station.
The track has directional signage equalling world-class standards, to improve traffic safety and support efforts made by RTA to ensure safety of road users in the emirate, Al Banna said.
The cycle track forms part of bicycle master-plan which includes more than 900kms of bikeways over the next few years. The bike rental service in the area also aims to facilitate the integration of the operation systems, provided, the cycling lanes are extended along the tramway with a view to integrate them with tram service, he said.
