World’s largest waste processing plant to come up in Dubai

The UAE unveiled new Dh.6.6bn worth environmental and sustainability initiatives in Dubai.

This includes building the Dubai Centre for Waste Processing Facility, the largest of its kind, having the capacity to generate 200MW of electricity annually from waste. The electricity so-generated will be beneficial to power 135,000 residential units.

The first phase of the project is expected to be ready in 2023, while the whole project is due for completion in 2024.

Warsan area of Dubai has been identified as the location for the new facility. With an investment of Dh.4bn, it will have the capacity to process 5666t of municipal solid waste per day, and 1.9mn tonnes of municipal solid waste on annual basis.

On completion, this centre will be the world’s largest waste processing plant in terms of its processing capacity.

The facility will include a 15 reception points, a waste weighing unit, 27 gates, five furnaces, a steam and power generation zone, 10,000 gas processing units, a zone for metal extraction from incinerated waste.

Commenting on this, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the UAE Vice-President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, said “Providing a clean environment is at the heart of our efforts to advance the development and provide a high quality of life both now and in the future.”

We have adopted global best practices and implemented innovative projects to preserve our environment and protect the health and safety of people in the UAE,” he added.

The new plant is the largest infrastructure project in Dubai, and is aimed at addressing the present and future waste management, and the green energy requirements.

Further, the UAE plans to develop the first open garden along Al Mamzar Creek with an investment of Dh2bn Green Dubai Project, which will see an addition of eight million square metres of green spaces.

UAE also plans to develop public beaches in Dubai worth Dh.500mn, Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary with an investment of Dh.100mn.
