Dubai World Expo postponement, a catalyst for economic growth

25 May 2020

The World Expo in Dubai has been delayed until next year, owing to coronavirus pandemic, which could play a huge role in the global economy recovery, points out Severi Keinala, Commissioner General of Finland for Expo 2020 Dubai.

The international event has now been postponed and will now be held from 1st October 2021 to 31st March 2022, with the move being backed by majority of Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) member states this month.

The Finland’s ‘Snow Cape’ pavilion, spanning 1867 sqm, within Expo 2020 Dubai Mobility District topped out in February and was due to be ready by September this year.

Speaking to the media, Keinala said “We may find that a one-year delay presents new opportunities for Dubai and all countries participating in Expo 2020 Dubai.”

“Historically, after a significant economic downturn, new growth eventually emerges, and autumn 2021 could become a significant milestone, marking our achievement of overcoming the worst and marching on towards a full recovery,” Keinala said.

This will be the right time to re-establish long-lasting business ties and forge new relationships globally, while showcasing some of the world’s greatest innovations, Keinala pointed out.

The Expo 2020 Dubai is a great opportunity to serve as a platform for fresh growth among participating countries, exhibiting all visitors and companies.

Among the 173 days when the expo will run, Finland was already booked for 130 days of events at the pavilion.

With the additional time that the countries now have at their disposal to prepare for 2021 opening, strategies can be refined, strong partnerships can be formed, programs evaluated and additional content can be created inline with new country and business objective,” Keinala further said.
