The much-loved Keith Waterhouse play 'Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell' is coming to Alserkal Avenue's performance space, The Junction from 09 August - 11 August.
The highly successful stage production describes the life and times of a real-life London journalist, the titular Bernard. The title of the piece is a reference to his Spectator column, which he often struggled to complete given his late night Bohemian lifestyle. Fortunately for him, his friend and cohort Keith Waterhouse remembered enough to pen this play on the great Bohemian who frequented Soho back in the day. The role has been played by a number of famous actors, including Peter O'Toole and John Hurt, all of whom relished the chance to portray the raconteur.
Often when he couldn’t submit his article before the deadline and no substitute was readily available, his long-suffering magazine would print the one-line apology, ‘Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell’.
The play is both richly comic, and deeply poignant - especially given Bernard's tumultuous life, struggles and disappointments. Directed by Sanjeev Dixit, the play is a Third Half Theatre production.
