Experimental production # M E D I T A T E DANCE-THEATER by the 'HERE & NOW COLLECTIVE' gets set to premiere at Center point Theater, DUCTAC on Thursday 26th April.
Conceptualized and directed by the Abu Dhabi-based French choreographer Fleur Antoine-Hindermeyer, the show is a mix of dance, theater, meditation, martial arts, singing, live music, spoken word and multimedia. Fleur started on #Meditate in June 2017 with the formation of the Here & Now Collective — a group of 11 artists from seven countries comprising singers, dancers, musicians and actors – and the show was developed over a period of nine months, culminating in a one-week residency at the Manarat Al Sadiyaat this February. He conceived #MEDITATE DANCE-THEATER as a journey based on living arts and traditions practiced in Asia and Europe. Traditional dances and music from India and Spain, martial arts from China and meditative movements inspired by Sufi tradition follow each other on stage to form a story: the story of the journey of going deeper within the self. This is a journey from emptiness to pure joy via a progressive, unifying process through sound-movement creation and reception.
The 73-minute performance is composed of three main chapters: Space/Here, Time/Now and Energy/Here & Now. While Space/Here is about the body’s connection with space, explored through traditional and contemporary Kathak (a form of Indian classical dance), Time/Now is linked to the mind and is expressed through Flamenco. Energy/Here & Now explores the body-mind connection through martial arts and energetic sounds of mantras and traditional sutras.
The show also includes theatrical moments, video screenings and sound recordings of worldwide meditation traditions. There will also be a social media component where a montage of Instagram posts will be uploaded live from the stage. Among the featured artists are Flamenco dancer Raquel Reina, Martial arts master and actor Man Yan Hor and Flamenco and Persian music singer Roseta Torres. The ensemble also features Indian percussionist and vocalist B.C. Manjunath.
Following the Dubai performance, the show will embark on a world tour. Tickets for the show start at Dh85. Gates open at 7.45 pm for an 8.15 pm start.
If you love meditation, dance and music in all its forms then this is the event for you with a never-before-seen showcase of original choreographies covering traditional and contemporary presentations of Kathak, flamenco and contemporary dance alongside Qi gong, Tai chi, Sufi meditation and live guitar, flute, percussion and vocal arrangements.
