An adaptation of Nikolai Gogol’s Diary of a Madman will be staged at The Junction in Dubai from April 18 to 21. The one-man Off-Broadway show arrives in the UAE after shows in New York and Los Angeles.

‘Chapter one creates’ presents their first production Diary of a Madman, based on the short story by Nikolai Gogol and adapted to the stage by Ilia Volok & Eugene Lazarev at 'The Junction' on Wednesday 18 until Saturday 21 April 2018.
Diary of a Madman centers on the life of Aksentii Ivanovich Poprishchin, a low-ranking civil servant who yearns to be noticed by a beautiful woman, the daughter of a senior official, with whom he has fallen in love. A pompous yet somehow endearing figure, Poprishchin records in his diary about his gradual, mesmeric slide into lunacy. He also makes mischievous sport of the limited language skills of his Finnish maid, Tuovi. The story portrays the average man’s ironic quest for individuality in a seemingly indifferent, urban city. Throughout the narrative, interludes of lucidity provide striking, hilarious and powerful counterpoints to the deepening psychosis.
While Gogol's short story is counted among the finest examples of the compressed-narrative form, there's a hint of bloat in staged version stretched to just over two hours. But a little self-indulgence seems permissible when the clowning is so endlessly inventive, reaching dizzying absurdist heights in Poprishchin's accounts of canine espionage.
The hypnotic performance of 'Diary of a Madman' featuring virtuoso – Ilia Volok - began its incredible journey on March 2012, at the Actors Circle Theatre in Los Angeles. Since then it has received great acclaim and commendation, and the enthusiasm and esteem for Volok’s performance has only been amplifying. He has won the Best Solo Performance award at the Los Angeles Fringe Festival. Ilia Volok has also starred in films such as The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, and has received critical acclaim for this role.
