The solo show ‘Kafka’s Ape’ is a metaphorical view on South African society. It highlights the complexities of identity in post-apartheid South Africa and in the human race in general. The show is performed at The Junction, Alserkal Avenue on June 7-8, 2019.
The show is adapted and directed by Phala O. Phala. Kafka’s Ape tells the story of Red Peter, an ape struggling to overcome the confines of his forced captivity. This solo show, which stars actor Tony Miyambo as Red Peter, is a commentary on post-apartheid South Africa. It explores notions of identity, appearance and freedom through the metaphorical lens of a confined primate.
Kafka’s Ape won a Humanity and Social Sciences Award for the Best Public Performance in 2018. Through the journey of Red Peter the play provides a narrative that helps to question the understanding of otherness. Don’t miss it.
