​Othello at Dubai Opera

Shakespeare fans, get excited: Othello is coming to Dubai Opera.

The tragic tale will be performed on the Dubai Opera stage from January 30 to February 2, with matinee and evening performances on Friday and Saturday. It’s the first ever play to be staged at the stunning Downtown Dubai venue.

A fifth performance is added on Tuesday January 29 with ticket sales available exclusively for schools. It is the first time that Dubai Opera has hosted a play and it looks like it's going to be spectacular.

Othello, an English Touring Theatre, Oxford Playhouse and Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory Production, marks the first play to be staged at Dubai Opera in 2019. Following a critically-acclaimed tour and London run, Richard Twyman’s vital production of Othello will be performed over three consecutive days.

Venice; a western colonial power employs the newly-married Othello, a Muslim general, to lead their army against the impending Turkish invasion. In a society torn apart by discrimination and fear, Othello’s life quickly unravels. Manipulated by Iago, he turns on everything he holds dear. And what a story it is – Othello encompasses themes of love, betrayal, and jealousy. In fact, Othello is where the phrase “green-eyed monster” came from.

This drama - penned by William Shakespeare more than 400 years ago - retains a contemporary edge, and adds world-class theatre to Dubai Opera's wide range of entertainment offerings.
