A highlight of Dubai's event calendar, the Al Gaffal Dhow Race is a long-distance sailing competition that takes place in the spring in Dubai. There's a reason the Al Gaffal Long Distance Race celebrates its 30th anniversary this May – it's a hugely popular, integral part of the traditional watersports scene.
Held since 1991, the race was established to honour the nation's maritime heritage. Many Emirati families trace their roots to the pearl trade with ancestors who were divers, dhow captains or pearl merchants, and the event celebrates their history.
See skilled boatsmen travel aboard majestic 60ft dhows from Sir Bu Na'air, an island located 65km off the coast of Abu Dhabi, all the way to Dubai.
A truly captivating sight, this not event to be missed, proving to be the perfect sign off to Dubai International Marine Club's (DIMC) season for 2020/2021.
