Dubai’s hot, dusty environs make sport of any kind a challenge, most of all ice hockey. This said, Dubai is a city of ski slopes and air-conditioned city-sized malls, so we shouldn’t be too surprised that ice hockey is played here.
Local enthusiasm has skyrocketed since the UAE Ice Hockey Federation founded the Emirates Hockey League 10 years back. The new season begins on 17th February. Governed by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), this league comprises of five teams: Viper/WB, the Abu Dhabi Scorpions and the Dubai Mighty Camels (made up of expats) along with the Abu Dhabi Storms and the Al Ain Theebs (made up of Emirati players).
Dubai Ice Rink, the Olympic-sized ice rink managed by Emaar Retail LLC in The Dubai Mall, is partnering with Abu Dhabi Ice Sports Club to host the Emirates Hockey League Dubai matches.
Residents and tourists alike are invited to see these diverse teams, which embody the region's multicultural social fabric, go head-to-head in a battle for the victor’s title.
The stadium style seating of Dubai Ice Rink can accommodate more than 300 spectators and offers unobstructed views of the matches.
