More than 30,000 world-class runners are set to descend on Dubai this year for the 20th edition of the annual Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon- the world's richest road race, with a winner's prize of US$20,000.
Both seasoned marathon runners and aspiring amateurs can tread in the footsteps of the record breakers who have run the path before, with 4km and 10km distances on offer for those who aren't up for the full marathon. Participants can take in some of Dubai's most iconic sights, including the Burj Al Arab, on their way along the race course.
The marathon is open to runners over the age of 18 years, 10km to 15 years and older and the 4km is open to runners of all ages. The perfect race to hit personal best timing, runners can expect excellent weather in the range of 15 to 20 degrees centigrade and a flat course. Most of all, it's an excellent opportunity to take along the family to enjoy the glitzy sounds and sights of this Emirate.
In its relatively brief history (the race was first held in 2000), the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon has become one of the fastest, most respected and the most lucrative marathon in the world in terms of prize money.
Each year thousands of runners take to the roads in this beautiful city in the United Arab Emirates for this extraordinary race starting next to the Burj Khalifa in downtown Dubai. The course and the race is so fast that when Ethiopian great Haile Gebreselassie won in 2008, his time was the second fastest in marathon history -- and since then seven other runners have bettered his time.
Live bands and a selection of other activities will be available at the Marathon Village throughout the day to entertain the participants and spectators. Food and Beverage facilities will also be available at the Marathon Village.
Spectators can cheer the runners on and enjoy the festive ambiance filled with healthy snacks and sports accessories from all the top brands, so head down with family or friends for a fun, sporty day in the sunshine.
