Rulers in the United Arab Emirates announced Saturday that they appointed Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as the president of this hereditarily ruled nation on the Arabian Peninsula.

The state-run WAM news agency said the rulers of the country’s seven sheikhdoms made the decision at a meeting.

Mohammed bin Zayed (MbZ), the former president's half-brother, has been the de facto ruler of the UAE for years now, particularly after Khalifa suffered a stroke in 2014.

"We congratulate him and pledge allegiance to him as do our people...and the entire country will follow his leadership to glory," Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, who is also UAE vice-president and premier, said in a Twitter post.

In a statement, United State's President Joe Biden congratulated Sheikh Mohamed.

"I congratulate my long-time friend Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on his election as President of the United Arab Emirates. As I told Sheikh Mohamed yesterday during our phone call, the United States is determined to honour the memory of the late president Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan by continuing to strengthen the strategic partnership between our countries over the coming months and years.

The UK's Queen Elizabeth II has today sent a message of congratulations that reads:

"While it is under sorrowful circumstances, I offer my sincere and warmest congratulations on your appointment as President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi.

"I look forward to the continuation of the strong and historic bonds between our two countries and peoples."

Chinese President Xi Jinping has congratulated Sheikh Mohamed on his election as the President of the United Arab Emirates.

In a congratulatory message, Xi said that he stands ready to work with the new president to deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership for the benefit of the two countries and their people.

Indian Prime Minister Narendar Modi tweeted: "My best wishes to the Ruler of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohamed on being elected as the new President of the UAE. I am confident that under his dynamic and visionary leadership, our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership will continue to deepen."
