The famed oratorio ‘Messiah’ by Baroque composer George Handel is coming to Dubai Opera in a pre-Christmas show on December 8, 260 years after Handel’s death.
Handel's best loved oratorio will be performed in its entirety by St. Petersburg Tchaikovsky Theatre of Ballet Orchestra and Dubai Opera Festival Chorus.
The Dubai Opera Festival Chorus comprises some 150 voices - all based in the UAE - that was specially-created earlier this year for the BBC Proms Dubai for a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth. The UAE-based ensemble will come together with the St. Petersburg Tchaikovsky Theater of Ballet Orchestra, conducted by Andrei Danilo, immediately after their run of festive Nutcracker performances.
Messiah first debuted in Dublin 1742. The St Petersburg Tchaikovsky Theater of Ballet Orchestra will perform it in the UAE after their run of Nutcracker shows at Dubai Opera.
Composition of the complete 260-page oratorio, began on August 22, 1741, and was composed in just 24 days, when Handel finished the final orchestration on September 14, 1741.
In his study of Handel's work, the late American-Hungarian musicologist Henry Lang described Messiah as "perhaps the only major work about which public sentiment is unanimous. Its freshness, its warmth, its beautifully rounded forms and sculptured melodies offer universal experience to men of all walks of life and all shades of faith.”
