Reel Palestine's annual film festival will kick off at Cinema Akil with its biggest programme to date, bringing you more than two screenings per day, talks, a vibrant market of Palestinian crafts and flavor and some more surprises.
The first screening is “What Walaa Wants” which is a compelling true story about courageous commitment and defiant dreams. What Walaa Wants, a documentary about a teenage girl’s dream of becoming a Palestinian Security Forces police officer, won the Special Jury Prize for Canadian Feature Documentary at the Hot Docs International Film Festival.
Toronto filmmaker Christy Garland spent six years following outgoing and opinionated teen Walaa Khaled Fawzy Tanji, who lives in Balata, the largest refugee camp in the West Bank.
Walaa, who is 15 years old at the start of the documentary, was raised in a refugee camp in the West Bank while her mother was imprisoned in an Israeli jail. Walaa grows up determined to join the Palestinian Security Forces–a feat for few women, especially one with a wild spirit.
Enduring boot camp and reigning in her indolent personality–Christy Garland's documentary is the coming-of-age film of a young woman jumping through hoops and hurdles to defy all the odds stacked against her. “What Walaa Wants” premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2018 and is showing at Alserkal Avenue’s independent film theatre Cinema Akil for three days this January.
