Dear Zoo at The Theatre

Due to overwhelming demand, Rod Campbell’s best-selling classic lift-the- flap book, Dear Zoo, was adapted to a live action show on stage.

The live action show will be playing in The Theatre, Mall of the Emirates from May 25-28, by Art For All, who believe that love for the theatre starts from the earliest ages and lasts a lifetime.

The show was brought to life in 2018 as a brilliant stage production return to UK theatres in 2022.
As a book Dear Zoo, has delighted generations of young readers since it was first published in 1982 and has sold more than 8 million copies worldwide and Dear Zoo live on stage! will continue to delight audiences since it opened on Feb. 5 at The Albany Theatre, Coventry.

Celebrating 40 years in 2022, Dear Zoo, published by Macmillan Children’s Books, the story of a child who writes to the zoo asking them to send a pet, continues to delight each new generation of children as they lift the flaps in search of the perfect animal.

Michael Gattrel, director of ‘Dear Zoo’, explains the lure of doing such a show. For one thing, it’s a story that’s known by most people — the book has sold about eight million copies over 36 years.
For another, there’s audience involvement. “Children’s theatre can be so interactive, and they can immerse themselves into the storytelling — you can’t beat live theatre and you can’t press pause in the theatre either,” he adds.

But how do you snip together the pages of what is a flap-up storybook in a way convincing and yet entertaining? That was a challenge, explains the director. “Ensuring that the telling of the storytelling is true to original book.”
