​Hemali Bhuta at Jameel Arts Centre

Jameel Arts Centre, one of the major contemporary arts institutions in Dubai opened its new Artist’s Rooms to the public on March 7, and this will run through June 8, 2019.

Multidisciplinary visual artist Hemali Bhuta’s works is displayed in one of the artist rooms. Belonging, security, individuality and change build the foundations of Hemali Bhuta’s multidisciplinary art. Taking the Art Jameel Collection work Fold as a starting point, Hemali is creating a multi-sensory room that incorporates textiles, reworked carpets, henna and spices, and that investigates in-between and transitory spaces.

Hemali Bhuta’s work deals with the effect of time on spaces, through which she tries to transform the impression and identity of a space into a tangible experience. Her most recent solo show was at the Centre international d’art et du paysage de l’ile de Vassiviere (CIAP), France (2018).

The works are comprised of organic and natural materials like rubber, cotton, spices, twigs, gold and natural dyes, spread across the room to varying effects. Some lie on the floor while others redefine the space to create a palpable tension between the works, material and their inhabited room.
