Tune in to a lecture by award winning director, choreographer and artist Stephan Koplowitz at A4 Space, Alserkal Avenue on January 29.
This lecture will look at the history of site-specific performance, with examples of groundbreaking public art from the past 30 years of his career.
Stephan is the former dean of dance at CALARTS and an American award-winning director/choreographer known for his work on stage, film, and creating original site-specific multi-media works for architecturally significant sites. Stephan creates films and interactive media performance works, including his ongoing project Revealed- utilising a room-sized camera obscura and 'Learn, Capture, Repeat' - an audience participation movement portrait event.
His recent work includes, The Northfield Experience (2018), an immersive sited multi-arts/theatre/dance event for the entire city of Northfield, MN, Mill Town (2017), a site-specific performance/installation for the historic mills, Lewiston, Maine, orRed Line Time (2013), a site-adaptive durational performance for LA Metro’s Red Line, commissioned by the Goethe-Institut.
His work over a period of more than 30 years aims to modify people’s perspectives of place, site, and scale, infused with a sense of the human condition and concerned with the intersection of natural, social and cultural ecologies within urban and natural environments.
