Dr. Wessels is a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon and a firm believer in a dedicated team effort to address the problem of cardiac and thoracic diseases. Dr. Wessels relocated from Johannesburg, South Africa to Mediclinic Middle East in 2003. In South Africa, he managed a busy private cardiothoracic practice in addition to being the chief surgeon in the Johannesburg Heart Transplant Program. Dr. Wessels has been a privileged member of the Red Crescent Surgical Team performing cardiac surgery on humanitarian basis in other countries.

Since joining Mediclinic Middle East, his cardiac team has performed hundred of open heart procedures with outcomes that compared favourably to international norms. The major part of their work is surgery for coronary artery disease with significant numbers of valve-related procedures also being performed.
