More than 160 construction projects in UAE are facing delay in completion due to high shortage of labor, reveals the latest industrial figures.
The Managing Director of Al Habtoor Engineering, David Savage, said -The Gulf market is the hottest construction market in terms of activity levels, showing no sign of reduction. There has been sudden boom during the past, but not a sustained one in the world of construction industry.
There are about $160bn worth of projects in Dubai alone, with about one million labourers in the construction industry, and about 95 percent of them being foreigners.
Across all industries, in the UAE, about 42.5 percent of expatriate workers are Indians, out of which, 60 to 70 percent of them are working for the construction industry, said Samir Khosal, the Vice-chairman of Dynamic Staffing Solutions. He added that lot of the main contractors are now looking at technology as a means to reduce the labour component.
The Executive Director at Arabtec, Greg Christofides says “We currently have about 40,000 people and expect an increase of 50 percent in 2008.”
