Dubai roads to see major revamp in 2014
The road map in Dubai is likely to undergo a drastic change in 2014, as there will be road diversion, road construction or such announcement taking place every now and then. In fact, even in the year 2013, Dubai has not remained the same. Al Khail Road saw a major revamp with widened highway and improved intersections offering better connectivity to Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. Road access in Jebel Ali villages was improved, Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT) got more accessible through new connections to surrounding communities, Trade Centre Roundabout saw addition of new parallel road linking First Al Khail Road with Sheikh Rashid Road and Rashid Tunnel was renovated to support high volumes of traffic.
Now major plans have been lined up for the year 2014, while some projects have already begun and are likely to see completion this year, and a new series of projects will kick-start in the following year.
As revealed by CEO of Traffic and Roads Agency (TRA), Maitha bin Adai, the terms of road developments in 2014, this year the first flights took off from Al Maktoum International Airport in Jebel Ali area.
Sheikh Zayed – SMBZ Road:
Two new connections between Sheikh Zayed Road and SMBZ will materialize next year, with one in 2014, one through Al Maktoum Airport Street, and other through Jebel Ali – Lehbab Road, said Maitha. This will be completed in first quarter 2014, and these form part of Stage 4 connections of the Parallel Roads project.
Improvement of Jebel Ali area:
Widening of the Jebel Ali – Lehbab Road will also be completed during the same year, with 99 percent of the project works already completed in 2014. Other connections in the area will be made between SMBZ Road and Emirates Road, just outside the premises of the new airport.
Al Houdh Roundabout
The new road, namely Yalayes Road will extend from Al Houdh Roundabout serving Green Community and Dubai Investment Park, but, the project may take 18 months for completion, although the work has begun this month.
JLT – SMBZ Road
JLT will be linked to SMBZ Road by end of 2014. The re-opening of vital intersections has been announced this month, with most works having been completed. The construction of the link to SMBZ Road is still remaining and will be ready before the end of 2014.
Business Bay-Al Khail Road
A new road will be established in Business Bay, leading to Al Khail Road. As part of Parallel Road project, traffic improvements were made this year, aimed at enabling smooth traffic between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. Work on the new road will commence in 2014, enabling free traffic flow from Al Khail Road to Business Bay, said Maitha.
Umm Suqeim Road
To increase connectivity between Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road and SMBZ Road, the improvement of Umm Suqeim Road will be done in 2014. The work will be completed by end of 2014.
Dubai Creek Extension
Another ground=breaking project will be extension of Dubai Creek, although the project would take three years for completion. The three-kilometer stretch project will be named Dubai Canal, and will lead the already extended creek from Business Bay area to Jumeirah beach, moving through Safa Park, Sheikh Zayed Aroad, Al Wasl Road and Jumeirah beach Road.
2014 project pipeline
Several other projects are due to be launched in 2014. The road corridor will be improved, road to Dubai International Airport will be expanded at Al Ittihad Bridge, Al Wasl Road and Jumeirah Beach Road will be improved, works will commence on Al Houd Roundabout, Academic City Road, Al Aweer road and International City.
Also, internal road improvements will be done in Al Mamzar, Oud al Maeerna, Al Nahda, Sama, Jadaf, Umm al Sheif, Al Manara, Sufooh, Al Mamzar Park, Al Warqa, Safa 1. Parking areas such as Al Nahda 1, Al Mamza, Tecom and Al Warqa will also be rehabilitated and improved parking options will be established at Mosques.
