Ban on carrying electronic devices in US-bound flights

22 March 2017

Travelling to the US has more hurdles on the way, as the latest is the ban issued on carrying electronic devices on flights from 10 specific airports to the US. Any electronic devices which are bigger than a smartphone cannot be packed into checked-in baggage.

Although cell phones and medical devices are excluded from the ban, no laptops will be allowed in hand luggage officially as of 22nd March.
The US government, on 20th March, stated that it is temporarily barring passengers on certain flights originating in eight countries and 10 airports from bringing in laptops, iPads, cameras and other electronics in carry-on luggage from 21st March.

The reason for the device ban is not immediately clear. The US security officials are yet to comment.

This follows the US Travel ban on seven predominantly Muslim countries including Iraq, Iran, Sudan, Somalia, Syria and Yemen, which was later suspended by federal judges for being unconstitutional.

The latest ban is indefinite and will get effective on 22nd March, Wednesday. As per reports, the ban will be applicable to non-stop flights to the US from 10 international airports and will affect nine airlines which include Cairo in Egypt, Kuwait City in Kuwait, Amman in Jordan, Doha in Qatar, Casablanca in Morocco, Istanbul in Turkey, Riyadh and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the UAE.
