Sinopharm Vaccine shows efficacy against delta variant, reveals new study

21 July 2021

Sinopharm’s vaccine is particularly effective against the delta variant, according to a new study.

In the vast majority of recipients of the study, Sinopharm’s vaccine produces antibodies that are effective against the highly contagious delta variant.
Over 95 percent of the total 282 people involved in the study, developed antibodies within two weeks of having received the second shot, according to researchers at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka.

Nearly 81 percent developed specific antibodies that are capable of neutralising the virus at levels similar to those seen after infection from the Sars-CoV-2 virus.

However, antibody responses have been lower, in people over the age of 60, in comparison to those in the 20 to 39 age group, the researchers said.
“Seroconversion rates and immunogenicity appear to be lower in older individuals,” the researchers mentioned in the paper, which is yet to be peer-reviewed.

Immune responses to the virus variants were also analyzed by the researchers. It showed that while the vaccine was particularly effective against the delta variant, the response was slightly lower when it came to the original.

It was also noticed that the vaccine induced strong T cell and memory B cell responses, which are crucial elements of immune response, although the magnitude of responses have been less than those observed in few other vaccines, the researchers said.

Sinopharm developed two vaccines against the virus that causes Covid-19. The group tested the shot produced by the Chinese pharmaceutical company which has been widely used across the UAE. The WHO approved Sinopharm for emergency use in May this year.

Further, a study conducted in Abu Dhabi early this year, revealed that the vaccine is more than 90 percent effective in keeping people who have been infected with the coronavirus, out of hospital.

The Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre noticed considerable reduction in fresh Covid-19 infections among people who received the second dose of the vaccine in the emirate.

Research showed that all vaccines, including the highly effective mRNAs such as Pfizer-BioNTech are slightly less effective against the delta strain.
An early research by scientists at New York University also revealed that Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine is less effective against delta, and suggested that those who received Johnson & Johnson single shot vaccine may benefit from a second immunisation against the virus, in order to keep them protected from new strains.
