The taxi system in Dubai is one of the most popular means of public transports, and available at all public places in Dubai. It is one of the fastest ways to get around the city, particularly, to places that are not well-connected by the Metro.

There are both government-operated and private cab companies in Dubai. The Dubai Taxi Corporation (DTC), a subsidiary of Dubai RTA (Roads and Transport Authority), operates cream-coloured taxis. The well-known cab companies in Dubai include Cars Taxi, Metro Taxi and National Taxis. The Dubai RTA is the regulator of taxi services in Dubai. Deira is the most popular taxi stand in Dubai.

Dubai taxis can even be waved down the street, or can be found outside major malls or hotels. There are several taxi stands across the city. All taxis are cream coloured, with taxi signs on the roof. The red light implies taxi is occupied, while yellow light indicates it is available. Ordinary taxis are generally safe. It is best to avoid getting into private, unmarked taxis, as these are illegal.

There are various taxi companies, all with their own roof colours, plying taxis in Dubai. The special taxis with pink roofs, employ women drivers, and are specially designated for women passengers, and mothers with young children.

Each taxi rank has a location number, which needs to be included in your SMS request. You will receive a confirmation reply or a call from nearby taxi service.

Although private taxis are available and prevalent in Dubai, it is considered illegal, and at times, passengers get fined for using illegal car pool service.

Tipping Taxi Drivers

This is not mandatory in Dubai or even in rest of the UAE, unlike in New York or other places. Some people do not tip at all, while at times some tip up to 15 to 20 percent of the fare.

Taxis to Other Emirates

Each emirate has its own licenses for taxis. Therefore, if you catch a taxi in Dubai, you should catch only a Dubai registered taxi wherever you intend to go. Similarly, if you want to go from Sharjah to Dubai, then you should only get into a Sharjah registered taxi.
