As per the latest survey report by Mercer, although the job market in the GCC is not likely to witness the heights as seen in 2008, it will surely outdo 2009.
Major experts and human resources companies are of the opinion that hiring will remain on the agenda, as they head towards the New Year, following series of lay-offs seen in 2009.
About 56.4 percent of the surveyed companies are planning to increase their workforce during the coming year. Among these, one out of five agreed that they would increase staff strength by a minimum of 20 percent.
Contrary to expectations, survey said that 40 percent of the companies did not reduce headcount at all during the year. Among those that did, a substantial majority agreed that the reduction was less than 10 percent. Several of the firms surveyed agreed they have no intention to reduce headcount in 2010.
Going by the global trend, 70.5 percent of the surveyed agreed to have granted pay rises during the year. In 2010, nearly half the respondents agreed that they would provide basic salary increase, while 45.6 percent said they are yet to decide.
According to other leading experts from the UAE, staff levels will go up next year, but candidates should not expect the exorbitant levels seen during the boom times.
The employment levels have already gathered pace during the last quarter this year and there has been substantial activity in the job market, and there is renewed interest by clients who wish to hire.
Several of the respondents agreed that companies have begun hiring selectively for the long term in preparation for a measured recovery in 2010. The increase in employment is mainly under the impression that the market has hit the bottom of the global crisis.
As for the region as a whole, the higher the oil prices, the better the overall economy and employment levels. Majority of the companies are hoping 2010 to be a better year than 2009.
A country specific posting of job listings on Monster.com for each member of GCC, indicated maximum postings for the UAE (961 job postings), following by Saudi Arabia (337), Qatar (233), Kuwait (104), Bahrain (60) and Oman (45) job listings. Posted on 23/12/2009
