| The Ministry of Labour has granted permission to workers, who have not been paid salary for two or more months, to swap jobs, without having to wait for a No Objection Certificate (NOC) even after having received their dues. The Acting Director-General in the Ministry, Humaid bin Deemas, when speaking during a press conference mentioned that workers who have not been paid for more than two months can continue to stay with the same company, or choose to change jobs without the NOC. The rule is also applicable to those who have not been paid for two months or more, but decided to cancel their work permits. Such workers will have the six month ban enforced by the ministry, lifted. The worker has the right to leave his employer even without offering adequate notice period, if the company does not abide by its commitments stipulated in the employment contract. “How can we continue to grant work permits for new employees, when the company defaults on paying salaries for existing employees? It would be double standard to do so,” Bin Deemas said. Non-payment of salaries is one of the most serious violations companies can commit, he pointed out.
