The Ministry of Labour has formed new inspection teams to crack down on companies holding expired labour cards registered on their Ministry of Labour records.
The teams will be operational in all emirates and will inspect companies to check if they are holding expired labour cards. But the main focus of the teams will be on companies that have all their labour cards expired.
The Acting Director General at the Ministry of Labour, Humaid Bin Deemas, said that companies with expired labour cards pose a threat to labour market as they are the main sources for illegal employment.
Having expired labour cards on an establishment’s records, indicate that the company might be involved in some form of illegal employment such as getting people to work for them without work permits, or that the workers are still in the country, but are working for other companies illegally. Hence, when all labour cards in a particularly company’s records are expired, it is a cause of alarm, Bin Deemas pointed out.
The Ministry recently carried out survey of companies, whose labour cards have expired, to hold a more theme-oriented inspection. The number of companies registered at the Ministry is about 260,000.
There are 270,000 companies across the country with expired labour cards, out of which, 15,000 companies have cards that are three years past expiry.
According to Bin Deemas, these companies can be divided into three categories – either the expired cards belong to former employees who have left the country but did not cancel their labour cards, or the employees are continuing to work for the company without work permits or the labour cards belong to people still in the country, but are working for other companies illegally.
