About 99 percent of jobs in the private sector and 91 percent in the public sector in the UAE are covered by expatriates, out of a total of 3 million employees in the whole of UAE, revealed an official at the Dubai Municipality.
As per the current trend, UAE nationals account for less than eight percent of the workforce and by the year 2020, UAE nationals will account for less than four percent,- said Jasem Ahmad Al Ali, Human Resource Department, Dubai Municipality.
The private sector accounts for more than 52% of the total jobs in the UAE. About 10 percent of UAE nationals resign each year due to social or cultural factors, apart from gender inequality in terms of salary and position. Even ‘wasta’ or ‘nepotism’ is prevalent in the workforce, the official said.
Al Ali said that the unemployment rate of UAE nationals is 13 percent, at present. However, all job-seekers are not registered with Tanmia (National Human Resource Development and Employment Authority), while those registered are not prepared to take up work, and are seeking better opportunities.
