A senior official at the Labour Ministry said that imposing fines has proved to be effective in regulating labour market, keeping it free of violations.
The Assistant Undersecretary at the Ministry, Humaid bin Deemas, said that imposing fines for expired labour cards has helped in regulating the labour market to a great extent and has compelled thousands of companies to rectify their legal status.
Bin Deemas commented "Our fierce fine policies have compelled companies to either renew or cancel their employees labour cards."
The Ministry has enforced a yearly fine on each expired labour card in 2005, but the rule came into effect only in March 2006. So far, companies have paid Dh.400 millions in fines, reveal the statistics by Labour Ministry.
