The FIFA World Cup is one of the biggest sporting events in the UAE and will be held at stadiums across the country, with the Al Rashid Stadium playing host to Dubai’s matches. This edition is the 15th edition of Under-17 FIFA Football Championship.
This biennial event is one of the biggest international football championships in the world, involving a total of 52 matches played across the nation for over a three-week period. This is your opportunity to witness the birth of new generation of football superstars.
The earlier editions of these tournaments have given some of the best players in the world such as Ronaldinho of Brazil, Luis Figo of Portugal, Alessandro Del Piero of Italy and Juan Sebastian Veron of Argentina.
A Falcon, known as ‘Shaqran’ will be the mascot for the World Cup. The bird was named after a type of falcon found in the UAE, likely to be one of the most ubiquitous and popular sights during the competition.
In the UAE, preparations for the FIFA U-17 World Cup are progressing in full swing. The qualifying matches for prestigious competitions are being done, and the identity of competing teams is now open. The final draw for the event will be held on 26th August 2013 in Abu Dhabi.
The 24 teams that have managed to earn a berth in UAE 2013, will be divided into six groups of four. The top two from each section will automatically advance to Round 16, along with four teams in third positions with best records. The knockout stage will culminate with final of the event to be staged on 8th November 2013.
During the last edition of the event, two years ago, Mexican XI defeated Uruguay to lift up the trophy. Although the draw is still a month away, tickets for this year’s matches have been on sale since 26th June. Fans can still purchase their venue packages based on their chosen location.
Omar Abdulrahman, the popular 21-year old Emirati player, has been named as the ambassador of FIFA U-17 World Cup UAE 2013.
