Earlier, the academic year for schools began in September, and it was possible to begin school in FS1 or pre-KG at the age of two, if the child would be turning three by end of December that year.

The latest announcement by KHDA says that children enrolling in FS1 or Pre-KG from September should be three years old on or before 31st August of that year. Children enrolling in Pre-KG from April should have completed three years on or before 31st March of that year.

Children enrolling in FS2 or KG1 should be four years on or before 31st August for schools starting academic year in September, and the children enrolling in KG1 in schools with academic year in April should be four years on or before 31st March.

Same rules are applicable for children enrolling in KG2, provided they complete five years of age depending on the academic year of their schools (September / April).
