Capital Gate tower leans towards World Record

The Dh8 billion Capital Gate tower in Abu Dhabi, a techno-marvel tower is being built to lean 18 degrees (14 degrees more than Seventh Wonder of the World), and is leaning towards a world record.

An application has already been submitted to the Guinness Book of Records, for the category of ‘The World’s furthest Leaning Manmade Tower, and is judged by completion of external façade of the Capital Gate towards end of the year.

Currently the central core of the structure is being topped off, as it has touched the final height of 525 feet. This is a major achievement for the construction of the building, said Tony Archibold, Associate Director, global architects at RMJM Dubai, the designers of the tower.

The glazing on the external façade will be completed by the end of this week. The first phase of the Splash, sweeping down from the 17th storey of the tower over the top of the main ADNEC Grandstand, is likely to be completed by end of the year, Archibold said.

The work on the site began in August 2007 and the shell and the core took 27 months for completion. RMJM has had to face several challenges while working on this iconic building.

There are 490 piles descending 30m into the ground. Conventional piles and compression piles are meant to resist descending vertical load. Due to the lean of the tower, some of the piles are in tension, and are meant to resist ascending forces that would otherwise pull the piles from the ground, Archibold explained.

The 35-storey Capital Gate will house the first Hyatt hotel in Abu Dhabi, the Hyatt at Capital Centre, a luxury 5-star hotel with 189 hotel rooms, and the most exclusive office space in the Capital. It will also be the tallest structure in area offering panoramic views in all directions and will be visible from most parts of the capital.

The resulting building will be a delight which also serves as a key landmark destination and the focal point for Abu Dhabi, Archibold said.
