Abu Dhabi to house huge 65,000-seater retractable roof stadium
The UAE Capital will house the biggest stadium in the UAE, it has been announced.
An investor arm of the Government, Mubadala Development, is inviting tenders for relevant documentation next month, ahead of any contract for the proposed 65,000-seat stadium.
Such an initiative is the first sign of the Capital District taking shape on the mainland.
The building features a large-scale moving domed roof. The facility is aimed to be the future home for the national football team and the venue for major exhibitions and concerts. It is also one of the first projects announced for the Capital District, expected to come up between the Mohammed bin Zayed City and Abu Dhabi International Airport.
The proposed development will stretch more than 45kms and will have the capacity to accommodate 370,000 residents by the time of its completion in 2030.
The new stadium in Abu Dhabi is hoped to be a leading sporting destination of the future, as it has already brought several major international sporting events into the Capital such as the inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and next month’s Fifa Club World Cup.
The tender notice calls for qualified bidders who have previously built a stadium with a minimum capacity of more than 40,000 seats and have earned a minimum of Dh.4.5bn per year during the past three years will be accepted.
The new stadium is expected to complement Abu Dhabi’s efforts to turn the Capital into a leading sporting destination, as it is already the site of tennis and golf events drawing top-ranked players.
