UAE nationals cannot use ID cards to travel to KSA

Saudi Arabia has suspended the use of National ID cards for travel between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and the UAE by the nationals of the two countries, reported the Director General of Passports, Maj Gen Salim Bin Muhammad Al-Blaihid.

This measure was taken following the wrong depiction of the map on the identity cards of UAE nationals, which does not conform with the border demarcation agreement signed between the Kingdom and the UAE, on 21st August 1974, he pointed out.

The Kingdom had brought this discrepancy into notice of the UAE government, but nothing has been done to rectify the map, Al-Blaihid said.

As the UAE did not respond to the matter, the Kingdom decided to stop the entry of UAE nationals using their national ID cards inline with the rules of Article Four of the Joint Communique, he said.

The Article Four of the Joint Communique issued by the Interior Ministries of the two countries on 5th May 2007 gives the right to any of the two countries to end the facilitation of travel through use of national ID cards by just sending across a notification to the other party. This becomes effective after 90 days from the date of notification.
