The new Center for Gulf Indians gets underway

The Overseas Indian Center (OIC) for Gulf countries, planned by the Indian Government, years ago, is finally taking shape. The Head of the facility will be posted at Abu Dhabi. The date of opening is yet to be finalized.

The Counsellor (Community Affairs), a post created in the Embassy of India in Abu Dhabi, will be appointed as the Director of the center.

After having recently appointed Dr. Ellangovan, an Indian Administrative Service Officer, the center has finally commenced its operations.

The OIC, which functions with assistance from the Second Secretary and the Indian embassy staff, it will also receive local support staff and few officials from New Delhi, said Ellangovan, when speaking to the Khaleej Times.

He revealed that the details of work of the Center will be announced on obtaining approval from the Ambassador and the ministry. The center can conduct awareness programmes for overseas Indian workers, beginning from financial, medical and psychological counseling.

The main aim of the center is to conduct awareness programmes for overseas Indian workers, in all sectors, medical, financial, legal and psychological counseling. The center will also have to counsel Indians encountering legal issues with employers and others with whom they have personal issues and family problems to be tackled in courts.

Dr. Ellangovan also said that medical support would be extended to those who are extremely sick and to illegal migrants languishing in jail, apart from organizing medical camps to address health concerns of labourers.

The center will offer financial counseling for Indian expatriates to help their convert their remittances into productive investments in India.
