A new initiative, Dubai 2020, has been launched, by H H Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, aimed to engage Emirati society in shaping their nations future so as to host the World Expo and the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020.
Dubai 2020 will focus on several sectors within Dubai, and expand further to cover the entire UAE. The initiative is inline with Shaikh Mohammad’s vision for the ambitious future of Dubai that has no limits.
A work group, comprising representatives from various government and private sectors, will explore the potential of Dubai, and host two major events in 2020.
Shaikh Mohammed said “We need to engage our community in Dubai and the UAE in a discussion about our aim and everyone’s role in our future. For this, we require a clear, common goal which highlights shared universal human values. The Dubai 2020 initiative will take into account the manner in which we can shape our environment and society for future generations.”
These two global events – the World Expo and the Olympic Games will render a common purpose and play to our strengths, Shaikh Mohammed pointed out.
Dubai is home to people belonging to various cultures, who live together in harmony and peace, and the respect and mutual understanding can be further deepened when something more meaningful is achieved, he added.
Hosting these two world events in a single place for the first time in the Middle East, will be a major landmark move that would club business, science and technology on one side, and sport, education and culture on the other.
A feasibility study will be carried out before any further decisions are taken in this matter, making formal bids to the International Olympic Committee and the Bureau of International Expositions. Even the public will be invited to participate.
