Dubai Metro announced ticket prices

The Dubai Metro has been labeled as the cheapest public transport networks in the world, as the Dubai RTA (Roads and Transport Authority), announced the metro ticket prices yesterday.

A journey, which is less than three kilometers, will cost Dh.2, when paid with a ticket, or Dh.1.80 when using a prepaid card. The journey within any one of the five zones which the RTA has divided the city into, will cost Dh.2.50 for single ticket or Dh.2.30 on a card.

For traveling through two zones, Dh.4.50 will have to be paid for a single ticket, while Dh.4.10 will have to be paid on a card. A trip from one end of Dubai to another, or any journey which requires crossing three or more zones, is priced at Dh.6.50 per ticket, or Dh.5.80 using a card.

Students or Senior Citizens using a card with their personal details registered on it will have to pay 90 fils for a journey less than 3 kilometers, and a maximum of Dh.2.90 for longest trips. Passengers seeking to travel in ‘Gold Class’ carriages will be required to pay Dh.4 for short journey with a paper ticket, Dh.3.60 on a card, Dh.13 on a long journey with a ticket, and Dh11.60 for long journey with prepaid card.

Special fares for students and elderly have been priced at Dh.170 for a 30 day pass for students, while for elders a 30-day pass will cost Dh.30. A daily travel pass will cost Dh.14.

The new price structure is also applicable to buses, which currently costs Dh.2 for a journey anywhere within the city.

The Executive Director and Chairman of the Board of Executives at RTA, Mattar Mohammed al Tayer, said that the price structure is equivalent to the public transport in Singapore and Cairo, and is nearly three times cheaper than in Tokyo, Hong Kong and New York.

Apart from being luxurious and comfortable way to travel, the prices make Dubai Metro and buses, a more attractive option, he added.

The prepaid travel cards known as Nol, implying fare in Arabic, will be available when metro opens in September. The cards are classified into ‘silver’, ‘gold’ and ‘blue’ cards. Silvery can be used immediately for majority of the journeys. Gold can be used to travel ion “Gold Class” carriages, while Blue will be a personalized card with photo of the user, used by student and other discount fares. It can be recharged on the internet and it offers several loyalty schemes and incentives.
