The first phase of the Abu Dhabi Metro project will be operational by 2015, a senior official has confirmed.
Stretching 42.5km in length, it will get operational by September 2015, said Dr. Abdul Qader Al Shahbani, the Project Manager of the Surface Transport Master Plan at the Department of Transport (DoT) in Abu Dhabi.
Speaking during the MENA Rail 2009 Conference on Tuesday in Dubai, Dr. Al Shabani spoke about the master transport plan 2030 and said that it would be implemented in phases to cope with increasing transport needs of the emirate, in the wake of massive development.
The railway apart from serving Abu Dhabi, will also offer vital links to Al Ain, Dubai, Saudi Arabia and the Western Region. The study for the inter-emirate rail system will begin in 2010.
The 350km tram system will serve areas within Abu Dhabi city and the 130km of metro system will link airport with central business district and other vital areas. The areas adjacent to the metro will be served by trams.
The study for the metro and tram will be done this year. Dr. Al Shahbani also said that DoT is working on 2030 Action Plan and it would be implemented in phases, with specific targets allocated to each of the five phases.
Abu Dhabi accommodates a population of 900,000 currently, and this is likely to increase to 3.2million by 2010. The current road network will reach its maximum capacity by 2015 and will be unable to cope with the increasing transport requirements of the huge population, without a rail network, combined with enhanced road network, marine transport, public transport buses, and implementation of other policies.
