Public express resentment over the newly introduced e-bus cards

The Public Transport Agency (PTA) at the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) had introduced the new e-bus cards on 25th March 2009 on a few routes this year.

As per the system, the buses operating on a minimum of 25 routes in Dubai, accepts the e-bus cards only, and there is no option of paying by cash. This new fare payment system is hoped to be gradually implemented on all routes.

The e-bus card is worth Dh.20, but is sold at Dh.18 and is valid for 10 trips. With the introduction of the ‘e-bus’ cards, the ‘e-go’ cards that were so far being used would no longer remain valid after 31st May, as the ‘e-bus’ cards have replaced the ‘e-go’ cards.

This initiative by RTA is a part of its aim to introduce Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) System to minimize handling of cash by bus drivers. The new cards are available at bus stations and with bus drivers.

However, passengers have expressed their displeasure over the new policy and have termed it as ‘unfair’. One of the passengers who spoke to the Gulf News, said that the passengers should have the option of paying by cash too, as not all can afford to buy an ‘e-bus’ card.

One of the passengers, also a regular traveller in public buses, agreed that bus drivers on many routes have stopped accepting cash for travel and are compelling passengers to purchase e-bus cards, which costs a minimum of Dh.18.
