Abu Dhabi decides against implementation of the one family in one villa rule

Abu Dhabi Municipality has decided against implementing the one family in one villa rule, although authorities continue their inspections to detect residency violations in villas. However, the campaign against illegal partitioning of villas and overcrowded villas shall continue, revealed an official.

The Executive Director, Municipal Services, Abu Dhabi Municipality, Salem Al Maamari, said that the ongoing campaign against illegal partitioning of villas does not compel that only one family stays in one villa, he added.

“We are in the primary stage of regulating the villa accommodation, and trying to implement the current laws and rules in this regard. The campaign is basically against illegal partitioning and construction or extension of villas, without prior permission from municipality,” said Al Maamari.

We shall take stringent measures against the people violating the norms, and creating social and health problems, the official said. Another senior official also revealed that the campaign also targets farms, as plenty of farms have been found to have illegal constructions and renting in their premises for accommodating bachelors.

Several labourers have been found to be illegally living in farms, and routine inspections are being carried out to detect any violations in villas, said Eng. Omar Mohammad Al Hashemi, the Divisional Manager, Municipal Offices.

The campaign is being co-ordinated by inspectors at five municipal centers – Al Shahama, Al Mussaffah, Al Jafrana, Al Wathba and Al Bateen. The municipality gives sufficient time for landlords to fix violations, by issuing warnings to legalize the unauthorized construction or remove it. When these warnings go unheard, the matter will be referred to Municipal Courts, Al Hashemi explained.

The Municipality is also considering increase of penalty for illegal partitions may be to Dh.5,00,000, aimed to curb the practice.
