GITEX 2008 concludes successfully

This year Gitex week 2008, which ended last week, witnessed an increase of 5 to 10 percent in the number of registered trade visitors, each day of the show, a comparatively higher figure when compared to last year.

The Helal Saeed Al Marri, the Director General of Dubai World Trade Center, the organization which operates Gitex, clarified that in contrast to few media reports which said that the foot traffic in the show was unusually low, the hall was actually working better, as people actually know the organization now.

“Last year people had spent lot of time in search of the stand they were looking for. But this year as things were better organized, there was less traffic outside the stand, and people had been focusing on this,” Al Marri clarified.

He added that the WTA, Dubai Police and RTA did a tremendous job this year in reducing the impact from traffic, and several visitors were seen using the public transportation.

A senior Director of the VMware Software Company, speaking to the Gulf News mentioned that he was satisfied with the number and quality of visitors to his stand. His company helps large data centers in optimizing their computer networks.

Even the Manager of Silicon-Valley based Ruckus Wireless, agreed that although the day 1 of the event was comparatively quite, the other days were pretty good and attracted plenty of visitors.

In the meanwhile, DNRD (Dubai Naturalization and Residency Department) announced that about 200 visitors visited the stand Gitex Dubai 2008, for registering with the e-Gate system, which permits frequent visitors to Dubai to enter the emirate through an electronically controlled immigration process. Visitors to the stand were given 50 percent discount on their e-Gate passes.

A series of automated services were unveiled by DNRD for their customers during Gitex 2008, so as to meet the remit of Dubai e-Government. The Government plans to establish an e-society in Dubai. Innovative services introduced by the Dubai Government such as the ‘M-Visa’, self-service kiosks, facial recognition system and Amer services, all attracted visitor interest.

“Our accomplishments at Gitex 2008 have helped prove the importance of team work and the need to partner successfully with others to achieve this common objective,” said Maj. Gen. Mohammad Ahmad Al-Merri, Director General of DNRD, while also sincerely thanking the partners for their support this year.
