Dubai Municipality begins crack-down of multi-occupancy villas

The Dubai Municipality has embarked into crack-down of multi-occupancy villas. The campaign targets villas that are illegally occupied by more number of people than that stipulated as per the original building regulations.

As a part of this campaign, the Dubai Municipality has urged residents to report about buildings that violate the law through over-occupancy.

The residents were given a one-month notice, which ends today. With the deadline coming to an end today, the landlords violating the law will have to pay a fine up to Dh.50,000. Even villas with illegal partitions will attract fine.

Apart from the said, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority will cut off utilities to such villas, as directed by the Municipality.

A similar campaign was also launched in 2005, targeting bachelors who lived in premises that were otherwise designed for fewer people.

Dubai Municipality had also recently announced that only immediate family members are permitted to share villas. However distant relatives such as cousins and their families will not be permitted to share villas, and each case will be assessed individually, clarified Eng. Omar Abdul Rahman, Head of Building Inspection Section, Dubai Municipality.

According to Abdul Rahman, intense inspections will be carried out by Dubai Municipality teams all over the emirate, including market areas such as Umm Sequim and Jumeirah.

According to the municipality, sharing of villas is unhealthy and is prone to danger. Thus thousands of families sharing villas in the emirate will now have to face tough times.
